The core Drupal modules ensure that the various websites designed to serve the purpose of communities, blogs, forums, image galleries, etc. are able to fulfill the end-user requirements adequately.

The innumerable Drupal modules are mostly add-ons and contributed by the various developers of the Drupal community to enrich the range of Drupal functionalities. The core modules served with any standard Drupal download is sufficient to create a complete Drupal website. These modules can also be activated or deactivated without downloading other Drupal packages.

Drupal has an immense collection of contributed modules and this fact has added to the increased popularity of Drupal. These contributed modules are diverse in their functionalities and can be used while developing a website to lend it a unique and attractive feature.

The installation and configuration process of Drupal sees to it that all essential modules are included. These core modules help in creating a wide variety of websites rich in functionalities such as blogging, forums, meeting and event notification, and even the publication of various types of content such as online books, job postings, pages, polls, and stories.

These core modules can again be divided into two groups. One is the required core and the other is the optional core. Required core would have modules such as block that controls content and restricts access and filter that inputs formats. Then there would also be modules like node, system, and user that control access and management settings.

Then there would be a host of optional modules such as aggregator, blog, blogApi, color, comment, forum locale etc. Each of these supports a different function, for example, aggregator is used for publishing syndicate content, forum would be used for creating threaded discussions, and contact could be used for building contact among the multiple users, comment could then be used for commenting on the various posts, and locale is for providing multi-language support. Thus, the optional modules would be used as per the website requirements and at times for the overall smooth functioning of the websites, some of these core modules might even be disabled.

Logging and access statistics, advanced search options, caching features that can optimize a site's functionality, content creation and editing of the same by multiple users, controlling access and restricting the same, security features, update of any new release, elaborate and multiple system of menu and supporting of multiple sites, creating blogs, publishing books, posting comments, discussing through forums, polling or voting and much more is now manifold easier with the Drupal core modules.
